This is a tutorial for beginners or someone who has never painted to learn how to paint a sunset.

Step 1. Shake each color well

You have to do it to make sure the chemicals are mixed up.

Step 2. Put a dab of each color on the paper plate, far enough apart that they don't run into each other

Step 3. Using yellow paint, create a straight horizontal line either directly above or directly below the center of the canvas

This is your horizon.

Step 4. Draw a circular sun in the middle of the canvas just above the horizon

Step 5. Draw yellow from the edge of the sun towards the edges of the canvas

Always go left to right with your brushstrokes.

Step 6. Clean your brush in the water cup between color changes and pat it dry on the paper towel

Step 7. Add orange over the yellow

Step 8. Blend the orange into the yellow by pulling it down a little into the yellow

Drag the yellow into the orange to blend it evenly. Please note that the left side of the picture is blended while the right side is not.

Step 9. Add red just like you added the orange

Make sure to blend it in as you blended the orange and yellow.

Step 10. Add some purple to the top left and right corners of the canvas

Pull some of this down the sides of the canvas and into the center of the top of the canvas. In any case, do not pull it too far so that it can no longer be blended.

Step 11. Add a few white highlights around the sun to make it stand out

Drag the white into the surrounding colors. If it starts to fade too much in color, you can always add more.

Step 12. Go over the sun with yellow again to make sure it's glowing

Step 13. You can finish the lower part of the sunset however you want

This was completed with water. It was made from simple brushstrokes and blends, just like the sunset. You could also finish it off with black to make a silhouette painting. Or you could paint the sunset all over the painting. These are just a few suggestions!

Tips

Don't forget that color is very forgiving! If you don't like the way it looks, let the paint dry and paint over it later

Warnings

  • If toxic chemicals are present, wear gloves to avoid getting them on your skin.
  • Do not ingest the paint because of the chemicals that may be in it.
